PHILOSOPHY
The purpose of the Good Shepherd Cheerleading Squad is support school values to assist with school spirit, morale, and pride, and to provide a forum in which children can enjoy fitness, creativity and a sense of team.
It is the goal of Good Shepherd Cheerleading to foster confidence, build skill and promote good self esteem.
ROLE
The role of the Cheerleader is to bring joy to self and to others while:
acting as ambassadors for the school; encouraging school spirit; supporting Good Shepherd sporting activities; and being active members of a competitive team.
Modus Operandi:
Good Shepherd Cheerleading will be open to all children wanting to participate in the sport of competition cheerleading.
Good Shepherd has one large cheerleading squad that is then broken into teams. Cheerleading is available for children from kinder right through to year 6. Teams are compiled in accordance with age and skill to fit in with competition structure and individual abilities. Many factors are taken into consideration when putting teams together for a safe supportive cheer environment.
Good Shepherd Cheerleaders may have the opportunity to provide entertainment at school and community events. They may also have the opportunity to travel with sporting teams to cheer on the sidelines and encourage the crowd.
Good Shepherd Cheerleaders compete in State and National Cheerleading competitions. Dates and costs of competition activity will be provided at the start of every calendar year so that parents can make informed decisions as to whether the sport of cheerleading is an option for their family.
Good Shepherd Cheerleaders will train on school grounds during the school year at a time and day convenient to the coach and the majority of the team. Consideration needs to be given to adequate space and access to safe training equipment. Extra training will take place for cheerleaders in the lead up to competition during lunch times and may include weekends. We may include practice off school grounds to make use of appropriate flooring and equipment.
Good Shepherd is committed to partnering and supporting other Canberra based cheer squads for increased skilling opportunities, as well as for succession planning when our Cheerleaders leave Good Shepherd for high school.
A sense of squad spirit is encouraged across all Good Shepherd teams and negative behaviour will not be tolerated. Team building exercises will become common practice across the squad. During competition the Good Shepherd Cheerleader will show good spirit towards all cheerleading teams and offer encouragement and congratulations to all.
For Good Shepherd Cheerleading to run effectively the squad needs to be headed up by a team of coaches, assistant coaches and team managers. Each team will have a dedicated coach, assistant coach and parent liaison manager. A Principal Coach will work with a dedicated administration officer(s) to look after finances, communication, records management and general office management functions. The squad will also have a make-up coordinator and uniform coordinator.
The squad will call for parent support throughout the year to assist with competition preparation and travel arrangements. Lead parents will be identified at the start of each calendar year to work with the administration officer(s) and the coaching team.
A project management approach to cheer progression will be utilised. Coaches will work together to plan events, competition preparation, music and routines. A coaching pack will be put together at the start of each calendar year to ensure all teams are skilling/progressing in a similar manner and that all areas of cheer are addressed.
A term fee will be charged for all cheerleaders. Monies collected will be used for continued skilling/credentialing of coaches, purchase of training and skilling equipment, music, administrative costs and other items directed at the continued development and safety of our squad. Other costs for parents include uniforms, insurance, competition fees and costs associated with interstate travel. NOTE: Good Shepherd Cheer is a not-for-profit squad established for the benefit of students.
Cheerleading will work link in with the governance of the school and comply with school policies.
